Piano at Open Door (recommended ages 7 - adult)
Open Door uses a unique and non-traditional method to learning to play the piano. We approach it a lot like learning a new language. Students learn to play first and then begin reading and writing later. We acknowledge that music notation is only one way to communicate and learn music. We work to develop aural and improvisational skills and the ability to create original music in addition to being able to eventually read music. We have access to a studio filled with marimbas, drums, keyboards, a grand piano and a variety of other percussion instruments. Through these tools we place a large amount of focus on comprehensive musicianship, tapping into one's own vast supply of creativity and expression, and transfer of acquired skills to a variety of musical settings. This also helps students build ensemble playing skills and experience the joy of making music with others. This not only reinforces piano learning, but also instills confidence and an attitude of "I am a musician and can use my skills to create with a variety of instruments."
We proudly use the Better Practice App. This is a state of the art practice management tool that keeps daily practice efficient, joyful and musical!
